Mobbing Midnight Kickstarter is Live!

Crows, crows, and more crows: Mobbing Midnight is an anthology focused on the brilliant corvid!

Crows are peppered through world mythology and folklore- sometimes serving as a sign of ill luck, other times a trickster.

From American crows to hooded and carrion crows, pied crows to jungle crows- they come in as many shapes and in as many environments as we can dream up.

And my story is going to be in there, along with stories by fourteen other awesome authors!

Tentatively titled Crow Cage, it’s an urban fantasy tale of magic and mystery, following a murder of crows that are definitely more than they seem – and possibly more than that, too.

Check it out!

The Creation of a Story: How I Wrote My Piece for “What Follows”

There was a difference, Galina considered, between being immensely long-lived and being bulletproof, or, as the case may be, bomb-proof. She had met people that were both; she, on the other hand, was
probably not.

This is not the beginning of the story I submitted for What Follows.

The armies were coming.

Grace had gotten lucky, up until now. Her villa was far from the cities and she herself was distant, this century, from business or politics or fame.

But now the city was gone, fallen into burning heaps and the heaps burned to ashes. The so-called gods and the self-proclaimed heroes who had fought over the city were dead, dying, run away, or hiding. And the armies marched on.

Neither is this. But, As is often the case, they are the shell from which the final story, “Monster Godmother,” emerged.

It went something like this:

Me: So, what are you working on?

Ross: Story for April’s anthology of “How do immortals deal with the apocalypse?”

Me: *Ears perk* Is it open to new authors? Because “immortals and the apoc” is totally my ball game.

Ross: well, you can check. It’s like two and a half weeks till deadline, though.

At this point, I was plotting Escape From Rochester (a serial of a semi-immortal dealing with an apocalypse), thinking about Live Blog the Apoc (which is pretty much what it sounds like), and, in other words, neck-deep in one of my apocalyptic settings. Immortals and the apoc was, indeed, totally my ball game.

…and then I turned around and started the story three times.

That happens, sometimes. The story won’t start, or it starts and then it fizzles after half a page. I do the online version of crumple up the paper and start again.

This time, with a little over twenty-four hours till the deadline, I looked at my 1,164 words and was dissatisfied. I could totally complete the story – but it wasn’t the story I wanted to tell.

So on the drive home from work, I scribbled out an outline for a new story. (Don’t try this at home. For one, it’s really hard to read your handwriting when you’re writing while driving. For another, gah unsafe.) And over the following twenty-four hours, I wrote “Monster Godmother.”

I sat up on Rion’s bed for hours that night, doing word-sprints. And, while every other story had fought me every word of the way, this one flowed. It swam. The original concept, the bare bones, might have something to do with the first two stories I’d written, but this one had music. I wrote 4000-plus words in just over a calendar day. I’m not sure I’ve ever done that before (outside of NaNoWriMo), and I’m not sure I want to do it again, but it was fun. Sort of like the writing equivalent of extreme sports.

Then came the editing, pushing words around, making them fit. Speed-editing, begging for betas, second-guessing word choices. Do I say Ellehemaei (the in-setting word for the immortal-like beings)? It seems like a stretch when nobody outside of the tiny Fae Apoc fandom knows the word. So what, fae? gods-children? Both words fit, and yet neither word fits. In the end, I ended up using “gods-children” as the most evocative, and calling it good.

Then I sent it off to April, crossed my fingers, and waited.

And now here we are! Several months later, with a brand shiny new anthology in front of us, “Monster Godmother” nestled in there with Ross’s story, Rion’s story, and stories from M.J. King, Joyce Chng, Kate Larking, Nina Waters, E.V. O’Day, Crystal Sarakas, Sarah Lyn Eaton, and April Steenburgh. It’s a good cozy place for it, I think. Right in the middle of the apocalypses.

Totally my ball game. 🙂

August 12-August 19 in the Faerie Apocalypse

In the end of May, 2011, strange things started happening all over the world. Follow along with faeapoclive (Dreamwidth), faeapoclive (Twitter), and faeapoclive (Tumblr) as the apocalypse unfolds.

TOMAHAWK, Wisconsin; FARMVILLE, Virginia; CYPRESS, Texas(AP): What started in june in fort valley, Georgia with one man, Glen Carlson, has been spreading across the country: people creating giant five-pointed stars into their property, or, in some cases, into public land.

In Tomahawk, Wisconsin, Arlene Brady built the star, which she calls a “devil’s trap,” out of old pallet wood. In Farmville, Virginia, Lucas Gibson cut it into his wheat field. And in Fort Valley, Georgia, an entire family worked together to lay the star in white stone in their back yard.

What, exactly, the purpose of these stars is remains to be seen.

RIOTING IN ATHENS INTENSIFIES; AT LEAST SEVEN DEAD ATHENS, Greece(AP): Rioting began Friday around the Acropolis, and has only worsened since; Greece news sources are reporting at least seven dead, although the Grecian government claims “only minor injuries.” With the influx of visitors and opportunists seeking to visit the so-called “Zeus” who has taken up residence on the rebuilt Acropolis, Grecian police sought to maintain order. They declared a curfew and started forcing loiterers off the streets at dark. The tourists – and, some say, the Athenian people as well – responded with violence. Overhead photos show at least a city block on fire, and tanks in downtown Athens. Neither the Grecian police nor Zeus could be reached for a statement.

CHACO CANYON, New Mexico(AP): an enclosure nearly a mile on a side has been constructed around the historical site here at the Chetro Ketl Great Kiva.

Rumor and local witnesses say that a portal – a “glowing circle of light in the middle of the air” – was discovered here in early june, just as many of the other portals were appearing.

But the black-suited individuals, who will not reveal their affiliation, have had the place on lockdown ever since. Nobody except their people get within the perimeter, and they don’t leave, taking deliveries at the gate.

Last night, locals report seeing a series of seven “eye-searing” flashes of light come from within the enclosure.

VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE, THOUGH ILLEGAL, STILL GOING THROUGH NEW YORK CITY, NY(AP): Despite there being no legal precedent for such a thing, the vote of no confidence against New York Mayor Michael Bloomburg went forth as scheduled yesterday. The votes are still being counted, but new candidates are already beginning to campaign. Foremost among those candidates is Hera sheh Rheah, whose corporation, Peacock, Inc., poured millions of dollars into the campaign to depose Mayor Bloomburg.

CROSSVILLE, TN(AP): Reports have surfaced of ghosts walking the streets in this Cumberland County city.

People across the city have called in to the radio stations, posted photos on Facebook, tweeted out about the news – the are seeing the dead walk again.

One woman, known as @cumberlandbeauty, tweeted: “Just saw my grandmother walking down the street, just where she walked every day. She’s been dead five years.”

Another man, Ronald Smith, posted photos on Facebook of what appear to be translucent Civil War soldiers walking through the cemetery.

In normal times, this would be assumed to be some sort of citywide hoax, but, as the reports keep flying in, this reporter can’t help but wonder if the dead really are walking in Cumberland.
